ST PAUL'S C OF E COMBINED SCHOOL WOOBURN GREEN
A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
The Governing Board considered this issue very carefully and the focus of our decision making centred on the guidelines from the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education (ODBE) which strongly advises all church schools to take church attendance out of admissions criteria. Church of England schools were originally founded to serve the children who lived in that parish, and particularly the 'poor of the parish'. Their purpose was, and still remains, to offer an education to local children of the parish, of all faiths and none, based on the teachings of the Church of England, with the belief that moral and spiritual education was as important to children as learning skills or a trade. A Church of England school is not a faith school; a faith school is a school intended for pupils of a particular religious faith that does have to follow the national curriculum, but chooses what is taught in religious education. A Church of England school is not a school for Christians or for people who attend church. A Church of England school is a school that should be open to all children of the parish, offering children an experience of faith through collective worship and links with the parish church.
As a Governing Board, we felt it important to think about the advice from the ODBE and to ensure that the admissions criteria were reflecting the true purpose of a Church of England school. This resulted in the decision to propose changes to the admissions criteria from 2020.
As a Church of England school, all aspects of both strategic management and teaching and learning are embedded in Christian ethos and values and this will continue to be such.
I hope I have been able to explain the rationale behind our decision.
